Friday, 05 March, 2010
Moominvalley folk will charm at Belgian Comic Strip Center until the end of August. This spring and summer the Belgian Comic Strip Center features an extensive Moomin exhibition, which presents the work of the beloved Finnish illustrator and author Tove Jansson. The exhibition showcases sketches and originals, some of which have never been exhibited before. Most of the drawings have been acquired from the Moominvalley of the Tampere Art Museum and the Tove Jansson Archives.
The Belgian Comic Strip Centre is one of Brussels’ most popular tourist sights, with a quarter of a million visitors every year. The Moomin exhibition is the museum’s first significant exhibition ever dedicated solely to a female artist.
The Moomin voyage to Brussels is the result of collaboration between the Belgian Comic Strip Centre, the Moominvalley of Tampere Art Museum, Finnish Cultural Institute for the Benelux and the Finnish Embassy in Belgium.
The exhibition has been curated by Londoner Paul Gravett. The grand European audience will have a chance to familiarize themselves with Tove Jansson’s art until August 29th.
The Belgians, who brought to life for instance Tintin, the Smurfs and Lucky Luke, consider comic strips as a high-class art form. Now also the Moomintrolls will have a chance to become famous in Brussels, the capital of European comic strip art.
