Finnish Medixine Ltd has won tender for an electronic service provided by the Met Office, the UK’s National Weather Service, to patients suffering from Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disease, COPD.
Healthy Outlook service alerts the patients by an automatic warning in advance of impending high risk weather. Medixine offers the service as automatic voice calls in nine different languages. The system provides the patients an explanation of the expected weather conditions and asks questions about their medication and other relevant issues concerning their medical condition.
Healthy Outlook is based on the patented Medixine Health Forecasting product. Through reduced hospital admissions the new service can bring significant health care cost savings to Britain’s National Health Service NHS: the number of hospital admissions, each of which costs approximately 1700 pounds, have been reduced by 30 percent.
The system delivery and development agreement between Met Office and Medixine will last for 3-5 years. It covers also similar services to be developed for other medical conditions. According to Medixine CEO Tapio Jokinen the two parties have also agreed to join forces in promoting the services on wider international markets.
– Health Forecasting is a good example of the services developed on our platform. It enables warnings, and the collection of feedback related to them in any situation. Automatic voice calls were chosen for the implementation because COPD patients are elderly people, minority of whom use mobile phones, says Product Manager of Medixine, Pontus Lindman.
