Leading cancer researchers meet at Turku BioCity Symposium at the end of August

BioCity Symposium, which is held in Turku at the end of August, brings together the top of the world's cancer research now for the 19th time. This year's Symposium's theme is Tumor Microenvironment in Cancer Progression. The event is organized by the University of Turku and the Foundation for the Finnish Cancer Institute.
The keynote speaker of the assembly is the forefront cancer researcher Joan Massagué, who works at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She has carried out research for instance on cancer metastasis on genetic and cell levels. Also the other speakers, who come from North America and Europe, are leading experts in the field.
Also the acknowledged Elias Tillandz-prize will be awarded at the Symposium. It is awarded to the best scientific publications published in 2008 by BioCity Turku researchers.
Last decades' basic research on cancer has witnessed several remarkable observations for instance on the process of carcinogenesis. Thanks to these advances new medicines have been developed, which are now used in the treatment of cancer patients. In recent years this has become visible for instance in local treatment of cancers.
