KierrätäKännykkä.fi buys old mobiles for recycling

Thursday, 11 March, 2010

The new website KierrätäKännykkä.fi ('recycle mobile phone') launched by the Finnish company Suomen KännykkäRahaksi Oy enables people to recycle their mobile phones free of charge, and even earn while doing it.

The customer can order a postage paid, padded envelope, which can be used for sending the mobile phone for recycling. The customer will also receive a username for an online tracking system that can be used for following up the process of the mobile phone throughout the different stages of recycling. The company pays a reimbursement for all functioning and repairable mobile phones directly into the customer’s bank account within 24 hours of receiving the delivery. The compensation paid for the mobile phone can also be donated fully or partially to a chosen charity.

According to the company all the received mobile phones are recycled. Functioning mobile phones are recycled as they are, and mobile phones which cannot be refurbished, are re-used as raw materials for industry.

Daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reports that the functional and refurbished mobile phones are sent to developing countries through the charities that Suomen KännykkäRahaksi Oy cooperates with. These charities include Red Cross Finland, Finn Church Aid and Finnish Cancer Foundation.

At the moment, the service is only in Finnish but the goal of Suomen KännykkäRahaksi Oy is to become the market leader in Northern Europe and one of the best known operators in the field.
