Finnish music export shows international promise

Monday, 29 March, 2010

Market research commissioned by Music Export Finland and executed by Mediaclever Oy has revealed that Finnish music export is on the increase. The market value of Finnish music export in 2008 was over 23 million euros, which was 4 million euros more than in 2007.

The Goodwill research examined the incorporeal value of Music Export Finland and the potential of music export from the viewpoint of different stakeholders. A range of Finnish and international actors from within and without the music industry participated in the research. Majority of these participants believe that Finnish music export will increase in the next three years. Growth of general international interest and increase in music export items were considered as the most potential facets of the Finnish music industry today.

– There are many growth-driven, innovative companies operating within the music industry right now, and these companies strive to develop and internationalize. In addition to that, the operational environment of the Finnish music industry enables nimble moves and the development of innovative ways of earning money. Both of these aspects are based on the fact that we are not bound by slowly transforming, fixed policies and structures, says Director of Music Export Finland, Pauliina Ahokas.

The growth of Finnish music export has been boosted not only by sales, but also by service business, such as concert sales. Also the number of active international license agreements is on the increase. Finnish export turnover is the highest in Europe and in the Nordic countries. The music industry companies that took part in the research considered the United States and Japan to be other potential export markets.
